Autistic Parents Study FAQs

Is self-identifying included?

Absolutely. This is a study of the experiences of autistic parents. We define autistic as people who identify as autistic, regardless of whether they have a formal diagnosis. We recognise the social, medical, financial and systemic barriers to diagnosis.

What age children are included?

We are interested in hearing from parents with children of ALL ages. You don't stop being a parent when your child becomes an adult (mine are in their thirties). Some of the questions towards the end of the survey are designed for parents of younger children, and we ask parents of adult children to answer those questions in the context of how they parented when their children were younger.

Do I have to be a biological 'mother' or 'father'?

We recognise that families are complex. If you are in a parenting role, and see yourself as a parent, then we are interested in hearing from you

Are the questions autistic-affirming?

Most of the questions in the survey were written for this study, by an autistic researcher, and workshopped with autistic peers. There are two instruments at the end of the survey that are existing parenting measures that were not designed for autistic people (but are used in studies with autistic parents). We have included these because we want to know (a) whether they are appropriate for out community; and (b) how they could be improved

Do I need to live in a specific country or region?

The survey is open to autistic parents worldwide. The questions are in English and we recognise that this limits participation.
